Rutherford County
Today, one can step back in time to several historic sites filled
with Civil War history in Rutherford County. Located in the exact
geographic center of the state, Rutherford County is just minutes
southeast of Nashville on Interstate 24.
To experience life on the battlefield, one can visit Stones River
National Battlefield located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. This
600-acre national park and cemetery is dedicated to preserving
the memory of those who fought and died at this crucial Civil War
battle. Living history demonstrations are presented throughout the year.
In Smyrna, Tennessee, visitors can tour the Sam Davis Home and Museum,
where they will learn about the life of Sam Davis, "Boy Hero of the
Confederacy." The home built in 1820, rests on 168-acres of farmland
on the banks of Stewarts Creek. The compelling story of Sam Davis is
one you will not soon forget.
In Murfreesboro stands the stately Oaklands Historic House Museum.
This elegant mansion was once the center of a 1500-acre plantation
and the largest plantation in Rutherford County at the time of the
Civil War. Both the Union and Confederate armies camped at Oaklands
during the Civil War. This nationally registered, historic landmark
reflects a time of prosperity in the Old South, as well as the hardships
suffered during the Civil War.
